Kitty Cloud was born Oct. 10, 1914-Jan. 8, 2013, near Charlotte in the Steele Creek area of Mecklenburg County, N.C. to James Newell and Eudella Catherine Wilson.
Her life growing up centered around their large family, the farm and the Presbyterian Church. Her siblings were Lois, Howard, Marie, Fred, Margaret, Nan, Lloyd, Ernest, and Ferrie. At a young age, Kitty and her family moved to a farm in Bowling Green, South Carolina. She graduated from high school in Gastonia, North Carolina and continued on to Queens College in Charlotte. After college, she taught science and home economics for several years at Thornwell Presbyterian Orphanage in South Carolina. She married Rev. Athol D. Cloud, a Presbyterian minister, on July 4, 1939. Their shared Presbyterian ministry included churches in Porterdale, Georgia; Spring Hill and Stockton, Ala; Oxford, Miss; Itasca, Texas; Independence, Missouri; Newport, Ark; and Foley, Ala. They worked together in the founding of Spring Hill Presbyterian Church during the difficult days of W.W. II, moving an unused church building, board by board, from another location. In retirement she lived many years near Swift Presbyterian Church in Foley, Ala. She lived her last years in McAllen, Texas with her daughter Mary Cloud and she died in McAllen on Jan. 8, 2013. While living with Mary, Kitty assisted in the "round the clock" care of Victor Alvarez, a severely physically disabled young man. Victor was a very eager and intelligent college student in spite of his physical problems. Kitty Cloud was a wonderful caregiver, mentor, and friend. She is survived by four children, James (Susan) Cloud of Collierville, Tenn., Doyle (Pat) Cloud of Stewart, Fla; Mary Cloud of McAllen, Texas; and Jane (Dennis) Meade of Kansas City, Mo; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings, and her husband, the Rev. Athol D. Cloud (1908-1974) who was a graduate of Arkansas College and Union Theological Seminary. There will be a private family burial and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at the Swift Presbyterian Church of Foley, Ala. Memorials in lieu of flowers would be welcome to First Presbyterian Church, McAllen or Swift Presbyterian Church, Foley. A portion of these memorials will be forwarded to the Presbyterian Assistance Program providing a safety net for retired clergy in need.
