DAPHNE, Alabama— A 16-7 scoring burst by the Admirals in the second quarter led to a 23-16 halftime advantage for Bayside Academy and a 47-37 win over visiting T.R. Miller in Daphne Friday.
The Admirals improved to 2-0 in Area 1 and 16-6 overall while the Tigers fell to 2-9.
Channing Brodie, Dakota Brodie and Spencer Newman each scored nine points and Garris Goe added eight for the Admirals in their 3A, Area 1 home win over the perennially tough Tigers. Miller was led by David Barragan’s 12 points and Trae Walker’s 11.
Bayside led 7-1 five minutes into the game, but then suffered a series of missed shots and turnovers that turned into Tiger baskets and an 8-0 run for TRM which led 9-7 to start the second period.
“It was not a very pretty win, but it was an another area win and those are always good to have—no matter how they look,” said Bayside head coach Ralph Watson. “I did a poor job of substituting, maybe too much, too soon. You can’t do that against good teams and T.R. Miller always comes to play. They are young and not having their best start in a long time, but that just makes them play even harder. They never quit. But I’m proud of our guys, they didn’t panic. Got us back in it right off the bat and turned up and kept up the pressure. We played much better defense in the second half, made better passes on offense and got better looks, I think our press was working well and that may have been a big key.”
But the 16-7 run in the second period turned the tables for good as Bayside’s defense held TRM to seven points again in the third and scored 13 to take a 36-23 lead into the final eight minutes. Dakota Brodie hit a 3-point shot near the close of the third quarter and Spencer Newman opened the fourth with another trey to punctuate a relentless attack and a constant full-court press.
The Tigers scored 14 in the last period, many at the free throw line where they went 14-for-20. The Admirals struggled at the line making 16-of-29 but were well cushioned with leads as large as 16 points when TRM was forced to foul for time.
“Sixteen-for-29. That’s terrible,” Watson said, “We have work to do at the line, obviously. In a close game, it can be the difference. It’s good to be 2-0 in the area, but we’re capable of playing better and I think we will. ”
The Admirals travel to Brewton Tuesday to face W. S. Neal and will host Neal on Friday. Tipoff times for both games are listed as 7:30 p.m. on ahsaa.com
