FAIRHOPE, Ala.—Scottsboro out shot Fairhope 26-8 at the free-throw line and claimed a 56-51 win over the Pirates in the Tip Off Tournament Saturday. From the field, tournament host Fairhope outscored SHS 43-30 but had only 14 trips to the line while the ‘Cats got 31.

“We need to shoot better at the line, for sure,” said Fairhope coach Robbie Robertson. “We need to learn how to draw more fouls, too. But that comes with experience and we’re pretty young out there right now.”

Fairhope overcame a 16-12 first-quarter deficit to lead 24-23 at the half. A point-for-point (18-18) third period preserved the one-point Pirate lead 42-41 to start the fourth. FHS led 51-49 after a three-point basket by Davis Watson with 1:52 left. But the Pirates missed on their next three possessions without drawing a foul. The ‘Cats’ Malik Talley tied it with 36.6 seconds left then hit the go-ahead 53-51 with 19 seconds remaining.

Tavarus Tolliver led the Wildcats with 18 points, 11 rebounds; Talley added 14 points, 7 rebounds and Spencer Garner was 11-for-11 at the free-throw line while the team combined for 83.87 percent from the stripe.

Watson scored 14 points to lead Fairhope (2-2) and Kaleb Thomas added 10.

SHS, led by former Daphne assistant Kenny Hill, later head coach at Enterprise, improved to 2-0 with an earlier win over Bayside 71-48. The Admirals closed the tournament Saturday with a 53-30 win over Satsuma’s Gators.

Bayside was led by Spencer Newman’s 26 points, Seth Matthews and Conner Wilson added six each. Jeremy Lambeth led the Gators with 16.

Fairhope took a 67-26 win over Satsuma to open the tournament. Watson had 21 points, Tevin Brown had 18, Trent Baggerly had seven assists and Philip Martin nine rebounds.
