SPANISH FORT, Ala.— The second annual ‘Spirit of Christmas’ parade Saturday rallied the community and benefited two non-profit organizations.
The parade was a charitable event where food donations were accepted to benefit the Prodisee Pantry—a nonprofit food pantry in Spanish Fort that serves needy families in Baldwin County—and The Haven—a no-kill Fairhope-based animal shelter—which both need food and supplies.
The Haven sought dry and wet dog and cat food, as well as bleach and paper towels. The pantry sought items such as canned good, staple items, bags of black eyed peas, dried milk and canned fruits and vegetables.
The Haven and the pantry did not immediately return a Sun reporter’s calls concerning how much the parade’s efforts raised for their organizations.
Even though the Christmas parade has passed, these organizations will still accept donations at their locations.
The Haven can be reached at 929-3980 and donations can be dropped off at 559 S. Section St. in Fairhope.
Donations to the Prodisee Pantry can be dropped off at the church office in Spanish Fort United Methodist Church at 6530 Spanish Fort Blvd.; call 626-1334 for details.
Westminster Village residents Janice Britton and Irene Ostberg served as grand marshals in the parade that was led by the Daphne High School JROTC, which recently placed No. 1 in the state for the U.S.
Air Force Junior ROTC competition. The parade circled the Eastern Shore Centre.
Business such as Chick-fil-A, California Dreaming, Wintzell’s Oyster House, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s and First National Bank threw tokens, footballs, beaded necklaces and candies.
Boy Scout Troop 109, Cub Scout Packs 31 and 271 and dance studios joined in the festivities in tossing goodies to the crowds.
Families after the parade visited with Santa Claus, had their faces painted with Baldwin County Parent magazine and made crafts with Eastern Shore Parents magazine.
The Haven and Prodisee Pantry handed out information on their organizations.
