ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – A second Dollar General in Orange Beach is looking to open it's doors this summer on Canal Road next to Posh Furniture.

City officials say the company has agreed to a brick exterior.

“It’s going to be brick,” Community Development Director Kit Alexander said. “It’s not going to be your standard building construction. They’re complying with the aesthetic we are establishing on Canal Road so it will be a brick Dollar General.”

Site work is already under way and officials hope to have it up and open in just a few months.

“We’re actually under construction on that site so we’ll be opening it looks like later this summer,” Spokeswoman Crystal W. Ghassemi said. “We can put ‘em up pretty quick once we get everything ready to roll.”

The store will fit the middle size of the three different layouts the company uses.

“It’s actually going to be the DG-plus format,” Ghassemi said. “Our traditional stores have about 7,200 square feet selling space. Our market format has about 17,000.

“The DG-plus format is basically our traditional layout, but with additional cooler space so it’s actually about 10,000 square feet. It’s going to have additional offerings of dairy products, food products and be able to have additional selling space.”

When operational the store will employ six to 10 workers and that could change depending on the need.

“Anyone interested in applying can go online to dollargeneral.com and look at our careers section,” Ghassemi said. “All of our hiring is done on line now.”

This year alone, Ghassemi said, the company plans to add 635 stores nationwide.

“We look at four major criteria when determining where to put new stores,” she said. “The first is how we can best meet our customers’ needs. Our second is we look at traffic patterns, we look at demographic information and we also look at competitive factors.

“So when we take the four considerations our real estate team will look at whether or not it’s a good new store for us.”

Ghassemi said Dollar General has more than 10,000 stores in 40 states and employs more than 93,000 people.

“We’re looking by the end of the year to have over 11,000, she said. “We are actually the largest retailer by store count in the country. There are more Dollar Generals than there are Walmarts.

“We’re creeping up on Starbucks which has about 1,200 more locations than we do.”

Last year the company did $16 billion in sales.
