DAPHNE, Ala.—The 11th annual Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run is set for March 7 in Olde Towne Daphne. Proceeds will go toward SEEDS, Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools.

The 5K race begins near the Daphne Public Library on Main Street at 8 a.m. and follows a looped, flat course through downtown.

“It’s a certified 3.1-mile route,” SEEDS’ executive director, Denise D’Oliveira, said. Participants in the 1-mile fun run will start at Centennial Park, across from City Hall at 9 a.m. and finish near the library.

Event organizers will award race winners at 9:30 a.m. with prizes including items from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum Gift Shop.

“We don’t have a list yet,” she said of prizes. “In previous years, it’s been a laptop tote, a duffel bag and signature, designer fountain pens; things like that.”

SEEDS’ post-race party will feature live classic-rock music, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, soft beverages and children’s activities until 11 a.m.

Parking is available in the Daphne Civic Center complex and near Centennial Park. A shuttle service will run between the two locations.

Family members of Daphne students can save $3 by registering early through the school program for $15 for the 5K race. Day-of-race registration is $18. Participation in the fun run is $10.

One dollar of each registration fee will be donated to the participating student’s school.

“It’s up to every principal to how he or she applies it,” D’Oliveira said. “It’s usually applied to the phys-ed program.”

All other proceeds will go toward SEEDS’ 2009-10 Classroom Enrichment Grant Program. Since 2005, more than $83,000 has been used to fund school programs.

The homeroom at each school with the most amount of participants will win a Classic Rock Party.

“We bring in treats and a CD with classic-rock music,” D’Oliveira said. “The teacher calls and we set a time that’s convenient. A lot of them schedule it after standardized testing as a reward.”

Parents are encouraged to return sign-up forms by the class competition deadline on Friday, Feb. 20.

T-shirts and run numbers will be delivered to runners who register by that date through the students’ homeroom teachers on March 5-6.

All other race packets must be completed on event day from 7 to 7:45 a.m. at the registration table near the library.

Registration is available at Christ the King Catholic School, along with all five Daphne public schools, through mail or by going online.
