SEEDS support comes with barbecue

DAPHNE, Ala. — Who knew “the other white meat” could help area schools?

The second annual Pig in the Park — to be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday in Jubilee Courtyard on Main Street — will benefit Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools’ grant program. Tickets allow for barbecue-pulled pork, live music and children’s festivities.

Will Hughes Catering and Market will provide the grilling and serving; local businesses had donated money for the pigs, which a Robertsdale meat company supplied, according to Chef Will Hughes.

Attendees will be served barbecue-pulled pork po-boys, black-bean-and-corn salad, roasted potato salad, chips and deserts. Hughes will use a La Caja China grill — one that takes about three hours to cook the pig, as opposed to all day, he said. “It looks like a coffin on wheels.”

The atmosphere should be fun and inviting, he said.

There’ll be activities for all ages including live music by local musician Chad Giddings, a beer and wine booth by Uncorked Fine Wines for adults and spacewalks and Sno-Cones for kids, organizers said.

The location is special to Hughes, too, and not just because it’s located beside his catering business. He’d perceived that the courtyard was never used, and chose the spot for Pig in the Park so that community members could “familiarize themselves with it.”

The first event last year was a great success, SEEDS officials said.

The event raised $2,000 last year for the SEEDS Enrichment Grant Program — where teachers submit proposals to receive funds for creative projects. Such materials include digital cameras and smart boards, according to Denise D’Oliveira, SEEDS communications coordinator.

Hughes agreed that SEEDS received generous support for the inaugural Pig in the Park.

“We only advertised a week out and had 150 people show up. Everybody, even the employees, had fun doing it,” he said.

Advanced tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Will Hughes Catering and Market, Baldwin County Orthodontic Specialists, the Frame Corner, Daphne City Hall, Daphne Recreation Department, Uncorked Fine Wines, Riviera Utilities and The Neighborhood School.

Tickets are $20 at the gate and lunch is available for take-out. Attendees will receive a souvenir T-shirt in addition to lunch and free activities.
