ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — After all was said and done, the bragging rights and championship belong to the senior girls following Robertsdale High’s Powder Puff Bowl, played last night at J.D. Sellers Stadium.
The evening broke down as follows:
In the first round the freshmen upset the juniors 7-0, while the seniors beat the sophomores 6-0. In the second round the sophomores and juniors fought to a 0-0 tie, as the senior girls pounded the freshmen by a score of 12-0 to take the Powder Puff Bowl Championship.
Money raised from admission to the game goes to help fund the cheerleaders. Speaking of which, the guys reversed roles with the girls for the games’ cheering honors, and an uglier group of “girls” have never worked the RHS sidelines as those guys.
Yesterday, Dr. Cindy Erickson, a recently retired teacher at RHS, was honored by Alfa Insurance as the Teacher of the Month during the weekly faculty meeting. Erickson received a plaque, as well as a cash prize, both for herself, as well as for the school.
Over the past two weekends the Golden Bear Marching Band has participated in the Silverhill, Robertsdale and Loxley Christmas Parades. The students gave up a great deal of time from their weekends in order to give back to the community for all their help.
This Wednesday the County Honor Band auditions for selected band students will be held at Trojan Hall at Daphne High. Students will leave RHS at 2 p.m. for these auditions.
The Alabama High School Graduation Exam was given throughout the state this past week. Passing the AHSGE is a necessity in order to receive a diploma at graduation.
Whereas colleges and universities are interested in a student’s grade point average and ACT score, entrance into the trade schools, which are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds, is a bit different. The trades are looking for students who are willing to study plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, tool and die operations, and mechanics, both for automobiles and aircraft engines.
Speaking of trade schools, many of those who are mastering the trades are performing better financially than many of those who attend a four-year university.
A recent commercial during the Auburn-Alabama game explained that a number of Baby-Boomers are retiring from their jobs in the trades, and they aren’t being replaced. In an economy where work is often hard to find, the trades are offering a number of opportunities.
Students who are interested in learning more about mastering a skill within the trades should contact their counselor, as well as Amanda Bezeredi, the career counselor who visits RHS every two weeks.
The Golden Bear Classic basketball tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday here at RHS’s gym. Students and members of the community are invited to come out and support the Golden Bears as they try to add even more wins to their record.
Finals for the third and fourth blocks will be given on Thursday. Friday is the last day of classes, as the finals for the first and second blocks will be given. Teachers will be required to return the following Monday in order to turn grades in as well as attend work day events.
