Magnolia School enjoyed a fun-filled week of learning about Dr. Seuss while reading and writing. To encourage fun with writing, two writing contests were held. For kindergarten through 3rd grade students, students focused on rhyming words through a poetry writing contest. Classroom winners included Will Langston from Mrs. Ashley McKenzie’s kindergarten class, Lena Lee from Mrs. Betsy Christopher’s kindergarten class, Kaleb Gleason from Mrs. Michelle Davis’ kindergarten class, Bella Barlow from Mrs. Karen Ray’s second grade class, and Kimberly Larson from Ms. Wendy Simmons’ third grade class.
The overall K-3rd poetry winner was Dylan Spivey from Mrs. Ray’s class. He received a Dr. Seuss hat and a gift certificate to Books-a-Million. Fourth through sixth grade students wrote stories based on the Dr. Seuss book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. They were to write an imaginative story about an exaggeration of something they may have seen at Magnolia School. The 4th-6th grade classroom winners were Jordyn Croley in Mrs. Adrienne Ramsey’s fourth grade class, Tucker Cleverdon in Mrs. Leigh Blair’s fifth grade class, Grace Leverett in Mrs. Christie Watson’s fifth grade class, Connor Shedeck in Ms. Angie Walker’s fifth grade class, Sierra Goodner in Mrs. Melanie McDuffie’s fifth grade class, Kaden Edenfield in Mrs. Cindy Bay’s sixth grade class, Josh Lamb in Mrs. Martha Williams’ sixth grade class, Ariel Lipscomb in Mrs. Beckey Harrison’s sixth grade class, and Trinity Morgan in Mrs. Stacey Mashburn’s sixth grade class.
The overall 4th-6th grade story winner was Devin Spivey from Mrs. Blair’s class. He received a Dr. Seuss hat and gift certificate to Books-a-Million. To learn more about Dr. Seuss, each morning students participated in Seuss Trivia where they would answer a question of the day about Dr. Seuss or his writings. Two daily winners were chosen at random from the correct answers to receive a book and prize. During the week, students dressed in Seuss inspired clothes, such as crazy socks for Fox in Socks.
Students’ favorite day of dress up was Friday where they looked like their favorite Dr. Seuss character. The halls were filled with cats in hats, Thing 1 and Thing 2, the Lorax, Daisy-head Maisy, and many more. On Thursday, the Apollo Production, Inc, brought INiSee to rap about the importance of reading and their love of Dr. Seuss. Students enjoyed listening to some of their favorite Dr. Seuss’ books, such as Green Eggs and Ham and Oh! The Places You’ll Go, being transformed into songs. Magnolia School closed the week out with inviting guests to read to classrooms. The students and faculty greatly appreciated the following readers taking time out of their busy schedules to read: Mayor John Koniar, Gary Finch (Outdoors TV host), Brett Manual (State Trooper), Pam Magee (former Magnolia School principal), Martha Culleton, Sandra Guy, Gayla Ritch, Mary Rush Schreiber, and Aaron Morin. Students were excited to have such special people come read to them.
