Severed arm unearthed

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — The Baldwin County Sheriffs Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying human remains found in Magnolia Springs over the weekend.

According to Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack, a resident living at the end of Lipscomb Road notified the BCSO that he noticed his dog had dug up a bone, which he went to investigate.

“It appeared to be a human hand,” Mack said.

Deputies responded to investigate.

“At this time, it is identified as a human hand and lower arm,” Mack said.

He added that the limb appears to belong to a white male.

“The Department of Forensic Science will have to confirm that,” Mack said.

No age or additional identifiers can yet be determined.

“There was a ring on the hand,” Mack said.

The sheriff pointed out that while the ring is not very uncommon, authorities hope releasing its picture might prove recognizable to someone from the public.

Mack added that on Sunday, authorities conducted a full-scale search for additional remains.

“This property borders the Magnolia River,” he said, adding that the limb looked like it came from the water.

Investigative efforts included a water search by Alabama Marine Police and an air search by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

“The Klasskids Foundation assisted us in our ground search with cadaver dogs,” Mack said.

He said that since no missing persons have been reported locally, authorities are considering missing-person reports beyond Baldwin County in an effort to identify the remains.

“We’re working with other law-enforcement agencies,” Mack said.

He added that the search for remains continued Monday and spanned from Magnolia River to Weeks Bay.

At noon Monday, the BCSO issued an advisory that County Road 26 at Weeks Branch, east of County Road 49, was closed due to an Investigation. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes until further notice.

Mack urges anyone with information pertaining to this case to call the Baldwin County Sheriffs Office at 251-937-0202.
