FAIRHOPE, Ala. - According to a report received this afternoon by the Baldwin County Health Department from the city of Fairhope Utilities, an estimated 300,000 gallons of non-disinfected effluent was discharged into Mobile Bay.
The spill is blamed on an electrical problem at the city's wastewater treatment plant, and apparently affected an area primarily south of the Fairhope Yacht Club.
The health department urges residents to exercise caution if using these water bodies for recreational purposes. Also, thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught nearby, and wash hands after handling fish or seafood caught there.
