SPANISH FORT — Did you know your child is watching television at school? No need to worry though. It’s all educational and informational.

Now in its second year, the 10-minute programs are student-produced and offer insightful information as the students begin their school day.

The morning announcements video program is produced by the Media Club at Spanish Fort Elementary School.

School Technology Coordinator Kelly Knapp and Jeff Comer, a consultant., supervise the morning blurbs.

Principal Rebecca Comer and a member of the Media Club are filmed live while giving the daily broadcast.

The programs are shown on closed circuit televisions located throughout the school campus.

The daily announcements include information about the day’s weather, what the cafeteria is dishing out for lunch, the Pledge of Allegiance, birthday wishes and deadline reminders.

This is the second year the school has used a room on the campus as a film studio, Knapp said.

The studio includes cameras, microphones and seasonal backdrops.

Guest speakers are often invited to participate in the announcements, and Baldwin County Board of Education Superintendent Faron Hollinger will stop by to offer some quotes to the students.

In order to promote character education, Comer provides a “thought for the day.”

Commercials are also produced by the Media Club. Projects in the past include shooting footage of the book fair, a jewelry sale for special needs classes, Fall Festival and the Spring Affair.

Students in the Media Club are chosen based on their grades, behavior and teacher recommendations.

There are four groups, with 10-12 students in each group, which rotates during the school year. Money was raised by the PTA and also came from the technology fund.
