SF's Eubanks to play hoops for Sun Chiefs

SPANISH FORT, Alabama—Faulkner State Community College signed Spanish Fort’s Reagan Eubanks to play basketball for the Sun Chiefs next season. The 6-foot-5 senior shooting guard scored over 1,000 points in his career with most of that produced his junior and senior seasons.

“I’m just really excited to get to keep playing basketball in college and I think Faulkner, under coach (Jack) Robertson, is a great opportunity. I love it there and coaches are the biggest part of it. I think I found a place to stay for a couple of years.”

Eubanks expects to keep focusing on shooting while improving his ball handling.

“They talked to about me playing the two guard and concentrating on scoring but they also want me to work on handling the ball and getting bigger and stronger, too. But I don’t care who’s scoring as long as we win. The team comes first and I just want to do whatever they need me to do to help and be a part of a successful team.”

Spanish Fort coach Dru Powell said there was more to Eubanks than basketball skills.

“First of all Reagan’s a great basketball player. A scholarship certainly warranted here. We’re excited for him. But he’s also a young man with high morals and values and great character. A pleasure to be around, but serious about working hard and helping others. He’s always encouraging his teammates to do their best. Of course scoring with the ball is what he does best, but a lot of people may not realize what a great defender he is. Knows where to be. Knows the game.”

Robertson, who will be coaching his 40th season next year, echoed that sentiment. “We don’t just want good basketball players at Faulkner, we want good people. I’ve been fortunate to be around Reagan and his family as well as been able to see him play a good bit. Nobody doubts he can play. But it’s so important to have people who care about others, understand what we are all trying to accomplish as a team. We all have to give up a little of ourselves when we’re part of a team.”

He added that Eubanks will have to contribute immediately in a semi-rebuilding year with all but a few players moving on. “We will put Reagan to work right away along with mostly freshmen on the floor. We only have a few returning as sophomores so we may actually have to coach a little bit next year,” he joked. “We lost 10 and they did most of the playing for us. But it will be good experience for the freshmen.”

Eubanks averaged 19 points and six rebounds per game as a senior and scored 1,019 career points. He is the son of Shannon and Donna Eubanks and has not decided on a major.

"I'm leaning toward sports management but not declaring anytime soon," he said. "I just want to thank God and then my parents and coaches and teammates for supporting me and encouraging me. They made it all possible."
