Iris Augusta McKenzie Sherman, born June 12, 1914, a resident of the Sonora Community near Summerdale, died Saturday, April 12, 2008.

She was a graduate of Fairhope High School and Daphne Normal School and taught school both in Fairhope and Miflin prior to her marriage.

She touched many lives as a school teacher, Sunday School teacher, neighbor and friend. She was a devoted farm wife, active member of the Sonora Home Demonstration Club, PTA, and Marlow United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Ernest Sherman, her parents, Frank and Leona McKenzie; two sisters, Elizabeth Sandoz and Vera Wood; four brthers, Ellis McKenzie, William McKenzie, Walter McKenzie and Eugene McKenzie.

Survivors include six daughters, Sylvia (Gay) Lake of Tuscaloosa, Sybil Merig of Mobile, Patricia Sherman of Summerdale, Ruth (Vic) Underwood of Summerdale, Sarah (Robin) Parkhouse of Orlando, Fla., and Susan (Barry) Leibert of Mobile; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, May McKenzie of Mobile; numerous nieces, nephews and caregivers, Vera Pugh and Brenda Ford.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with graveside funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14 at Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Marlow United Methodist Church or to the United Methodist Children’s Home.
