SOMETHING UNUSUAL ABOUT YOURSELF: 10 years ago, I traveled out west, 4400 miles. When I came home I shared everything with my students. Anytime I travel, I bring pictures to show and tell to my students, so they aren’t just reading it in a book. I can describe to them what I’ve seen.
Sherri Darring has only known Fairhope Elementary School when it comes to teaching. She has taught third grade at Fairhope Elementary School for 21 years, including one year of student teaching. She even graduated from Fairhope High School and her two children now attend FHS as well.
“FES is a wonderful place to work,” Darring says. “The parents, the staff—we want every child to be successful.”
She chose to teach third grade because it’s a “great age.”
“They all have great personalities,” Darring says. “They love to joke and it’s still cool to like the teacher.”
She has always wanted to teach. She began working with children at 10 years old while babysitting.
“My husband says I’m a natural,” Darring says.
Her favorite part about teaching is seeing her students succeed.
“When the light bulb goes on, that smile they get,” Darring says is all worth it. “I love celebrating their successes.”
When Darring isn’t in the classroom, she spends time with her husband Jay Darring and her two children Sam and Mason. They enjoy activities outdoor, such as fishing, camping and going to the beach.
Darring began at Fairhope Elementary School and will end her career here as well. Darring will retire at the end of the current year.
“I’m not really retiring,” Darring says. “Teachers never stop teaching.”
