Ship could mean TV exposure

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The reality show “Reefmaker” based on David Walter’s business of the same name has been picked up and will run in four episodes on the Weather Channel starting on Oct. 9.

If the show is well-received, the network could pick the show up for another 20 episodes, Walter said. Show producers said if that happens the area receiving the 271-foot Yokuma for a reef will be featured on the show.

“If we get rolling and the show is renewed for another season, then we’re going to be in there,” Ed Rodriguez of the Alabama Gulf Chamber of Commerce said. “The economic impact of the exposure, that’s untold millions. That’s hard to measure, but that’s big. But even if we weren’t getting a TV show out of this, this could be a great thing.”

According to a release by the network, the show “follows a family of experienced divers and demolition experts who work to reduce erosion and pollution and to restore the area's once thriving ecosystem by creating artificial reefs - sinking everything from a Vietnam-era plane to a local shrimp boat.”

The premiere will be on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. and was filmed mostly on location at Walter Marine.
