SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Residents can shop with celebrities during a themed “Evening for Conservation” and ribbon-cutting scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27 at Bass Pro Shops.

For purchases made during those three hours, the store donates 50 cents for every dollar spent to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s More Fish Campaign, according to Stephanie Parrish, promotions manager for Bass Pro Shops.

The campaign is a five-year initiative launched to raise awareness and enhance the nation’s fish population by saving underwater species and their natural habitats, according to the campaign’s Web site.

“Our Evening for Conservation is a great time for people to come to learn more about local conservation groups and what they are doing for local conservation causes,” Larry Whiteley, Bass Pro Shops manager of communications, said.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a nonprofit program that was established by Congress in 1984. The goals of the foundation are to help restore, enhance and sustain the nation’s fish, plants, wildlife and their habitats. The foundation has awarded almost 9,500 grants to more than 3,000 organizations around the world. With their partners the foundations have raised more than $1.3 billion for conservation and $4 million in federal funds. More Fish also helps retain healthy populations of fish in our waters for years to come, according to the foundation’s Web site.

Celebrity guests on hand for the special evening will include NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr., Outdoor Channel TV hosts Jimmy Houston and Bill Dance, America’s Billiards star Jeanette Lee, major league baseball veteran Ryan Klesko, 2000 Bassmaster Classic Champion Woo Daves, five-time national turkey caller champion Walter Parrot and Miss Alabama Amanda Tapley, according to a Bass Pro Shops news release.

Celebrity guests will sign autographs and take photos for the event from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Many special guests will also be part of the event. Patrick Peterson, a disabled Army veteran from Fairhope, is the winner of three gold medals from the National Veterans Wheelchair games. Peterson, a paraplegic, serves as the phone operator at the Bass Pro store. He took home the gold in the 100- and 200-meter dash and in weightlighting, a news release said.

“Whenever I go to the games, I feel that I am part of something much greater than words can explain,” Peterson said in the release.

Former University of Alabama All-American Lee Roy Jordan will also make a special appearance. Jordan was a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys for 14 years. The Excel, Ala., native was named the nation’s outstanding lineman in 1962 and was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He also received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, which is only awarded to six former student athletes per year, according to a news release.

Dwight Stephenson, also a former All-American at the University of Alabama, who also will attend the event, played under famed coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Stephenson was ranked No. 84 on The Sporting News’ list of top 100 Greatest Football Players and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 1998, according to the release.

The event is free to the public and many local conservation groups such as Five Rivers Delta Resource Center, Alabama Wildlife Federation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Foundation, Ruffed Grouse Society, Coastal Conservation Association, Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited and many others will be on hand.

Bass Pro Shops founder, Johnny Morris, and Bass Pro Shops president, Jim Hagale, are scheduled to attend the event as well as Spanish Fort Mayor Joe Bonner. Conservation groups will sell food and drinks by the brands Johnsonville and Coca-Cola with 100 percent of proceeds going back to the organizations,  the release said.

The Bass Pro Shops No. 1 NASCAR race car, No. 20 Sprint car, Bass Pro Shops hot air balloon and the King of Bucks traveling whitetail deer mount exhibit featuring 25 world record mounts will also be part of the fundraising event.

The store will celebrate with a grand opening set to begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 28 and will include more special guests, store savings, door prizes and giveaways, the news release said.

Regular store hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
