LOXLEY, Alabama — Parents who want their children to participate in the Town of Loxley’s Summer Youth Program should make their plans now, said Town of Loxley Activities Director Tina Harris.
“This is my first year to be involved with this, so I don’t know exactly what to expect,” Harris said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
The five-week day camp is set to begin May 28 and will continue through June 28. The camp’s hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an extended program available from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for an additional charge.
Students will be involved in a variety of activities during the camp, according to the town’s website, www.townofloxley.org, including:
• Art activities.
• Craft activities.
• Outside play (monitored play on the children’s playground in the cool part of the day).
• Organized play (including volleyball, four-square, softball and other activities).
• Story time.
• Outside water fun.
• Games (board games, card games, hopscotch and other activities).
• Reading.
• Special activities for older children include baby sitters certification, digital camera, monitored computer time, etc.
• Movies.
In addition to daily activities, the camp will also include special presentations throughout the summer, including visits from the Loxley Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department, and from the Baldwin County Cooperative Extension Service.
The camp also includes outings such as free movie days at the Eastern Shore Premier Cinema 14 (formerly known as The Rave) in Spanish Fort.
The camp will also include water days every Friday, including slip and slides and other water activities brought in for the camp.
Camp supervisor Debbie Huffer will also provide nutritious meals for campers. The camp is staffed by professional counselors, Harris said.
The camp began in a limited capacity the summer following the opening of the Loxley Civic Center in 1999, Harris said, and was expanded to a full four-week camp soon after longtime director Joey Knight took over the program in 2004. This will be the sixth year the town has offered a full five-week camp.
The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 8 to 12. Registration is $125, which covers the five-week camp, the special programs and activities, all art supplies and any other activity that might occur during the camp period, according to the website. Lunch is provided for an additional $10 per week, or $2 per meal. Extended hours are available for an additional $5 per camper.
“I really wish I had something like this when my children were young,” said Harris. “To offer a safe environment for children to come and enjoy the summer at such a low cost is truly phenomenal.”
Anyone interested in signing up for the camp can print out a copy of the application packet available on the website which can be dropped off at Town Hall, or sign-ups will be available in person May 23 and 24 at the Civic Center.
“This year will be limited to 50 campers and we already have applications coming in,” Harris said, “so I urge parents not to wait to sign up.”
