SILVERHILL, Alabama -- The Silverhill Town Council voted to approve contracts for volunteer boards and committees at its meeting Monday night.

The contracts are set to begin in December 2012 and run through December 2016.

The Council will have to fill two openings and two alternates on the town’s Board of Adjustments, said Mayor Tim Wilson.

Contracts were approved for Nick Scozzafava, Mary deLaunay, Jimmy Woodall and Jim Hinote for the Board of Adjustments.

Additional contracts included:

  • Planning Commission: Stan Joy, Tonie Norden, Lamar Giles, Tim Wilson, Bert Jones, Shorey Dudley and Blake Langley.
  • Tree Board: Carolyn Koch, Steve Brooks and Shirley Stephens.
  • Library Board: Frankie Kucera, Shirley Stephens, Dorothy Edhegard and Margaret Stephens.
  • Save Little Hall: Jennifer Fiddler, Frankie Kucera, Stanley Gilland and Michael York.
  • Senior Activities: Mary deLaunay, Bonnie McNeil, Barbara Sharp, Judy Wynn, Betty Heinze and Margarete Kenny.

Contracts through 2016 were also approved for the Council and the Town’s 11 paid employees at Monday’s meeting.

The Town Council voted unanimously to approve the contracts with Council member Shirley Stephens not present at Monday’s meeting.

In other business Monday, the council approved Resolution No. 485-11-19-2012 renewing the town’s contract for tax administration with Revenue Discovery Systems.

The resolution was introduced at the Nov. 19 council meeting and advertised for two weeks before approval at Monday’s meeting.

Wilson also announced at Monday’s meeting that the town had received payment of depreciation costs from the insurance company for replacement costs of the Little Bohemian Hall, which was damaged when a tornado ripped through the area in April of last year.

The Town held a grand opening/ribbon cutting for the new Silverhill Community Center facility on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

After bids to build the structure came in at over $400,000, the town decided to use municipal employees to complete the project. Wilson estimated the using town labor, the structure cost about $230,000 to complete.

The Town received $167,000 from the insurance settlement for the former structure. Depreciation costs totaled just under $75,000, Wilson said. Preliminary indications are that the money will cover the additional costs for the structure and the town will not have to borrow money for the project.

The 3,000 square foot structure includes a 1,600 square foot meeting room, plus storage space, a fully-equipped kitchen, restrooms and a covered back deck area where the town plans to build picnic tables.

The Town’s annual Christmas Parade will be held beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. Float judging will be held at the Community Center with lineup at Silverhill School.

Pictures with Santa by photographer Cathy Elgie, sponsored by United Bank of Silverhill, will also be held at the Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The town is currently offering packages of two 5 x 7 photos for $10. Proceeds will benefit the Silverhill Kids Park.

An open house for residents will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Center.

Plans are continuing to rebuild the Little Bohemian Hall, which was turned and relocated inside the park earlier this year.
