Silverhill council receives tax check from Baldwin EMC

SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Silverhill Town Council conducted routine business at its first regular meeting of 2010.

Although there were just two items on the regular agenda, the council met for just over an hour, including a 6 p.m. work meeting and 6:30 p.m. regular meeting in which members discussed several items that were not on the agenda.

One of two items that was on the agenda was the presentation of tax payments from Baldwin EMC.

The electric cooperative presented a check for $20,261.95 to the town at Monday’s meeting.

Baldwin EMC District 3 representative Aubury Fuller said that the money was collected from 836 residents. All residents were within the town’s police jurisdiction, but outside the town limits.

Baldwin EMC collects a 3 percent tax for in-town residents and 1 1/2 percent for out-of-town residents, Fuller said. Silverhill does not currently have any in-town residents served by Baldwin EMC. All in-town residents receive power service from Riviera Utilities.

In other business Monday, the council voted to change its regular meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18 to Tuesday, Jan. 19 in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr./Robert E. Lee Day observance.

The council also voted to make Monday, Jan. 18 a holiday for all employees.

Employees will receive the day off effective this year and the council will hold a public hearing at its next meeting to change the town’s personnel policy to give employees that day off in the future.

The council also voted to approve an equity line of credit with Vision Bank for the town’s sidewalk grant.

The line of credit is necessary to go ahead with expenses for the town’s sidewalk project. The money would then be reimbursed from an ADECA grant.

In the only other item of business on the agenda Monday night, the council tabled action on the purchase of a copier which would be used by town hall, the town’s Police Department and Utilities Department.

Council member Bert Jones also announced that this month’s Community Awareness Program will be “The Truth About Swine Flu,” presented by Dr. Jason Pierce. The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Town Hall.

The Town’s Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce representative Mary deLaunay also asked council members for a head count for the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, which will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Baldwin County Coliseum.

Festivities are scheduled to begin with hors d’ouvres and a silent auction at 5:30, followed by a catered meal and program.

Called a “Night with the Stars,” the banquet will honor the Chamber of Commerce’s “Stars” for the year.

Council members were also asked to consider nominations for Man and Woman of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Tickets are $35 per person or $280 per table of eight. Organizers say formal attire is optional. Reservations required by Jan. 14 to 947-2626 or jmangion@centralbaldwin.com.
