Silverhill employees receive bigger raises

SILVERHILL, Alabama -- Employees with the Town of Silverhill will soon have a little extra money in their pockets.

At its meeting Monday night, the Silverhill Town Council voted unanimously to approve a 2 percent cost of living increase for the town’s 10 employees.

Mayor Tim Wilson said the town had budgeted a 1.5 percent increase, but wanted to increase that amount to 2 percent to offset a Federal payroll tax that was added to employees’ paychecks this year.

Wilson said with 29 weeks left in this fiscal year, by his calculations, the increase would cost the city an additional $3,500 over budget.

Employees received a 1.5 percent increase last year, officials said.

In other business, after several weeks of discussion, the council approved a contract for letterhead and envelopes with the town’s logo.

Council member Jared Lyles first approached the Council on Feb. 4 with a proposal to design letterhead, which would be used for official correspondence and business cards for the town.

Lyles worked with a company out of Loxley that he uses to supply letterhead for his law firm to design a logo which would be used for letterhead and envelopes and could also be used for business cards for the town.

The Council voted unanimously to accept the logo and purchase 1,000 sheets of bright white paper at a cost of $148 and 1,000 envelopes at a cost of $148 for a total cost of $396.

In other business Monday, the Council:

• Approved a request for a building cover for the town’s garbage and brush truck at  a cost of $2,995.

• Approved a request by Silverhill Seniors Director Mary deLaunay for a warming tray to be used for the group’s senior lunches at a cost of $219, provided that Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams could not find one at a cheaper price.

• Approved a request from Williams to surplus the town’s old garbage truck on govdeals.com.

• Tabled a request by Police Chief Kim Wasdin to purchase a cage to house stray dogs at a cost of $984.47. Council member Bert Jones reported that he could get some supplies donated. It was also discussed that the town could add a stipulation for fines for dog owners if dogs are picked up and housed at the facility.
