Silverhill Police: Charges in shooting death to be determined by Grand Jury

Posted

SILVERHILL, Alabama — Evidence is being turned over to the District Attorney’s office and it will be up to a Baldwin County Grand Jury to decide whether or not charges will be filed in a case that left one man dead and another severely beaten on Friday night, June 26, in Silverhill.

According to Silverhill Police, they received a call around midnight on Friday, June 26, that shots had been fired at a residence on McPhillips Road in Silverhill.

When they arrived on the scene, they found 25-year-old Ryan DeAngelis with a fatal gunshot wound. Police say DeAngelis was arguing with his roommate, Jeffery “Zach” Taylor and that argument escalated into a gun fight with multiple shots fired.

Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin said, while it is clear based on the evidence officers have gathered so far that the fatal gunshot was fired by Taylor, Silverhill PD has no plans to file charges against Taylor and has not ruled out the possibility of self-defense.

“At this time we are waiting for the report from forensics,” Wasdin said. “We have turned all of the evidence we have over to the District Attorney’s office and that evidence will be turned over to a Grand Jury to decide any charges.”

Taylor was also wounded in the shooting. A third roommate, who has not been identified, was not home at the time of the incident.

According to reports, firearms belonging to DeAngelis, Taylor and DeAngelis’s fiancé, were confiscated at the scene.

DeAngelis, a native of Pleasure Island, where his mother, Capt. Lori DeAngelis, is well known in Gulf Shores as the Dolphin Queen and runs a dolphin cruise boat out of Bear Point Marina, is being remembered by family and friends as the life of the party, fun-loving and charismatic, according to reports.

Friends of Ryan Burchett DeAngelis have set up a Go-Fund-Me account in his name to raise money to help the family with funeral expenses.
