SILVERHILL, Alabama – A committee from the Town of Silverhill will be participating in a Coastal Resilience Index Community Self-Assessment.
Mike Shelton, training program coordinator with the Weeks Bay Reserve Coastal Section of the Alabama State Lands Division with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, addressed the Council at its last meeting Jan. 15, asking the town to participate in the assessment, which would cover how prepared the community is for a disaster.
At Monday’s meeting, the Council came up with a list of names, including members of the Council, Police Chief Kim Wasdin, along with other community and business leaders, who could participate on the committee.
The committee would consist of eight to 10 people who would all be contacted and asked to serve. Once the list of committee members is finalized, a date for the meeting can be set.
In other business Monday, the council voted to send Silverhill Police Officer Tervelle Lee to the Alabama State Powerlifting Championships Feb. 22-23 in Mobile.
Lee has been working with members of ARC of Baldwin County in Robertsdale in preparation for the meet. Wasdin said the one-of-a-kind meet invites those with special needs to compete along with other athletes in a sanctioned competition. Winners from the competition qualify to compete in a national competition.
“There is a category for police, fire and EMS departments to compete and they have asked all the departments to send a man and a woman to the competition,” she said. Lee has agreed to compete for the Silverhill Police Department, along with Wasdin’s daughter, Alanna Blount.
The Town Council agreed to pay the $45 fee for Lee to enter the competition. Lee will have to raise the additional $45 membership fee in order to compete. Council member Shirley Stephens presented Wasdin with a $45 check at Monday’s meeting, and Council members agreed the money could go toward Blount’s fees for the competition.
The Council also heard a request from Council member Jared Lyles to design letterhead, which would be used for official correspondence and business cards for the town.
Lyles said total cost for letterhead and envelopes would be about $750 for a year’s supply. Lyles said he could also get 500 business cards at a cost of $39.
Council members agreed to allow Lyles to work with the company to design a logo to present at the Council’s next meeting Feb. 18.
In other business, the Council:
• Agreed to table a measure to re-finance town hall with United Bank of Silverhill in order to complete the paperwork for the project.
• Agreed to finance the purchase of a new garbage truck for the town either through a CD or through a line of credit. Financing for the project must be received by Wednesday, Mayor Tim Wilson said. The town plans to use a $75,000 bond to fund the project, but can use a portion of a $150,000 line of credit if they are unable to obtain the bond funds in time.
