Similator makes impression on Faulkner State Community College nursing students

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Faulkner State Community College’s Nursing Program is utilizing iStan, a human-like simulator by METI Learning, for nursing students and instructors to re-enact high-fidelity simulations that can lead to life-saving skills.

Because of their use of iStan in these simulations, Faulkner State’s Nursing Program has received national recognition from METI Learning.

iStan, who has been killed while texting and driving, gone into cardiac arrest due to allergies and even passed out on Faulkner State’s Fairhope Campus, can be programmed and placed in more than 150 true-to-life scenarios.  These re-enactments give students intense practice.

iStan resides in a private  “hospital” room on the second floor of the Borom Center on the Fairhope Campus. In this room, there are four video cameras used to record the students in action. After a simulation is complete, nursing instructors can review this footage with the individual students to help coach them through ways of improvement or praise them on how they handled a particular situation.

iStan has been a member of the Faulkner Family for just over a year.  During that time, the nursing program has utilized the simulator to spread awareness of the seriousness of texting while driving to local high school students. During this particular simulation, the victim (iStan) expires and the Faulkner State nursing students even demonstrate post-mortem procedures.

Along with the countless simulations and scenarios iStan has been victim of, the simulator also allows students to practice basic skills such as checking for consciousness, vital signs, and even internal bleeding.  iStan has the capability of simulating moving, breathing, talking, living and even dying.

In November, iStan will take the stage at the L. D. Owen Performing Arts Center on Faulkner State’s Bay Minette Campus to spread awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. The simulation is scheduled  Nov. 16 beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Anyone interested in the simulation in November should contact the Nursing Department at 251-580-2257.
