Six Daphne athletes sign with colleges

DAPHNE — Six Daphne High student athletes signed scholarships on National Signing Day last week.

Michael Dubose signed to swim for Delta State University. The three-time All State (’08 ’09 ‘10), four-time State Champion (100 YD ’08 ‘09), (Butterfly ’08 ‘09) is a six-year letterman. He was team co-captain ‘09, made Junior Nationals in ’08 ’09 ‘10, was named to the Southeast Swimming Top Ten and named All Baldwin County six times ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ‘10.

Chanel Elgin signed to play soccer at the University of Southern Mississippi. A forward, she has been named 1st Team All State ‘09, 1st Team All Metro, played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game ‘09 and the North-South All-Star Game ‘09, was All Baldwin County ’08 ‘09 and also played for the Oklahoma State Championship Team.

David Fowler also signed with Southern Miss and will play football. The 6’4, 290 -pound offensive lineman is a 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All Metro player and team captain. He played in the Alabama/ Mississippi All-Star Game ‘09, was named UTV Player of the Week, was All-Baldwin County ’08 ‘09 and named to the Alabama All-Star Team.

Amber Powell signed a cross country and track scholarships to run for the University of Alabama at Huntsville. She is the reigning Baldwin County cross country champion for 2009, was the County cross country Runner-Up in 2008 and made All Section ‘07 ‘08 ‘09 and All Baldwin County ’07 ’08 ‘09.

Heather Powell also signed cross country and track scholarships to run for the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

She finished third in the 2009 Baldwin County cross-country championships and made All Section ‘07 ‘08 ‘09 and All Baldwin County ’07 ’08 ‘09.

Jennifer Turner signed as a pitcher to play fast pitch softball at Anderson College in South Carolina. The right hander played in the '09 North-South All Star Game and was named All Baldwin County ‘09.

Turner has been a starting varsity pitcher since the seventh grade and played for the 2007 Alabama State Champion Baker High Honey Bees as a sophomore before transferring to Daphne. She has amassed a pitching record of 78-22, thrown 38 shut outs, two perfect games and seven no hitters going into her senior season.
