Six people taken from water after boat sinks off of Orange Beach

ORANGE BEACH, AL - A rental boat sank in the Gulf of Mexico just off shore of Orange Beach on the afternoon of May 23. All six people aboard were rescued.

Orange Beach Fire and Rescue responded to the call just after noon. The boat was about five miles south of Perdido Pass.

“At 12:09 OBFD was dispatched to a vessel in distress 5 miles south of Alabama Point in the Gulf of Mexico,” a post on the department’s Facebook page stated. “Marine 5 (Fire Boat) and Water Rescue Skis 1, 2, & 3 responded from Bird Island.”

Lt. Todd Posey said those aboard noticed the boat was taking on water and when the operator gave it gas the back end went under and flipped over. All aboard managed to get on life jackets and one was able to keep his cellphone out of the water to make the emergency call.

“While en route, Marine Units were advised by dispatch that all six adult occupants were in the water with life jackets on. Upon arrival all six occupants were transported by nearby charter vessel, "Heck Yeah" to the Alabama Marine Police office where OBFD Medics treated one minor laceration and made sure all others were ok,” the post said. No one was transported to the hospital.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Orange Beach Police units were ono the scene and an investigation is ongoing.

“There are two heroes in this incident; the occupants who all had on life jackets, and the charter boat, "Heck Yeah" who came to aid and transport all to land,” the post on the Facebook page stated.

“Wonderful outcome and we are so grateful everyone is OK.”
