Skilled artisans to display hand-crafted items during Spanish Fort’s Delta Woods and Waters Expo

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Environmental education and stewardship might be the overriding message of Spanish Fort’s third annual Delta Woods and Waters Expo, but organizers have worked lessons about creativity and craftsmanship into the packed itinerary as well.

“We need to teach respect for hand-crafted skills,” said expo volunteer Claudine Andress, referring specifically to often overlooked but labor-intensive activities such as boat building or quilt-making.

In addition to an array of educational and marine safety tutorials, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to witness several skilled artisans demonstrate the tricks of their trades.

Louis Wall of Mobile, for instance, will display a canoe hand-crafted from cedar that took him about three months to complete.

The three-day festival concludes April 30 at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center with Family Day, free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the singing of the National Anthem by Spanish Fort High School student Rebecca Womack.
