Charles Kenneth Slade Jr., 70, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., and long time resident of Fairhope, died, Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

He retired as a major after serving 22 years on active duty with the U.S. Army. His military assignments included serving as an armor officer, numerous positions in Army aviation, and included serving as president of the Army Aviation Safety Accident Investigation Board in Fort Rucker.

His career included tours in Germany, Korea and multiple tours in Vietnam. His awards include, among others, the Air Medal for Valor, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry,  RVN Gallantry Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and the Senior Army Aviator Badge.

After his Army retirement,  he received his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham.   He  served as an assistant district attorney, head of the Drug Task Force in Baldwin County,  contract attorney for Indigent Defense,   and municipal court judge for the City of Fairhope.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Charles Kenneth Slade Sr. and Marguerite Slade of Johnson City, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years,  Francia M. Slade of Fairhope; son, Teddy Joe (Jennifer) Faust Jr. of Fairhope; two daughters, Malory Lea (David LeBlanc and Andrea Holloway; grandchildren, Lizzy Faust of Fairhope, Amanda Nicole, Chelsea Lea, Kari Ann and Chad McIlrath, Gabriel LeBlanc, Jillian Marye and Hudson Holloway;  great-grandson Nathan McIlrath; sister, Penny Slade of Memphis, Tenn.; cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 3 at the American Legion Post 199, 700 S. Mobile St., Fairhope.  

The family requests memorial donations be made to a fund for the purchase of,  or improvement to,  parklands and greenscapes: Fairhope Greenscapes Fund, attention Nancy Wilson, treasurer, P.O.  Drawer 429, Fairhope, AL 36533.
