Smart students utilize smart methods for learning

The most commonly known barrier that inhibits most students from experiencing success in academics is a lack of effective techniques applied to the preparation of studying for exams.

Therefore, it is imperative that students take good notes. The notes should be dated and kept in separate binders for various courses. Students should also attempt to create a pattern of writing that contains organization in a type of outline form; including all key or significant terms that can easily be related to the vast amount of information or material read or discussed prior to the time of an exam.

If there is a portion of the content presented that does not make sense, students should ask questions or take the time to review the material once again before the next class lecture or meeting date. Taking the time to glance over the previous day’s notes or required readings before new information is introduced will likely increase one’s retention and mastery of content. Students should also stay active in their reading and pay close attention to unfamiliar or bold-typed vocabulary.

Since most learners tend to categorize themselves as visual learners, the more a student can visualize the material, chances are the more information he or she will remember. For example, students should utilize tools such as charts, diagrams, graphs, lists, outlines or even drawings in order to better grasp the content in an organized fashion. They should use these tools regularly and refrain from waiting until the last minute to ‘cram’ for an exam.

One key factor one must keep in mind when preparing for any class exam is to find a method for managing time effectively. One way to do this is by eliminating unnecessary “time wasters.” It is also important to keep a calendar that allots where exactly time is being spent each day. Always set aside a given time that is planned for reading, reviewing and working on future assignments. With the many unexpected obstacles that occur in life, it is keen to implement a Plan B just in case things should go awry.

If you are having a difficult time concentrating, remember that the art of concentration is to eliminate distractions, if possible. Focus on the task at hand and prepare for additional tasks in advance. Remember to stick to a routine and locate a quiet environment that is conducive to reading, typing, or drafting notes. Yet, at the same time, it is crucial that breaks are taken to avoid burn-out. After a break is taken, re-group and become engaged once again to find mastery in learning the content presented.
