ROSINTON, Alabama — Anyone driving along County Road 64 in the Loxley-Rosinton areas of Central Baldwin County Tuesday might have caught a glimpse of something that made them pause.

Men and women dressed in fatigues were walking down the street carrying an American flag, flanked by chase vehicles and a police escort.

The soldiers, both active and retired military personnel, were on the final legs of an 812-mile trek that spanned 10 days and five states as part of the 2011 Tim Davis Memorial March to honor fallen comrades and their families and to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Air Force Special Tactics members began the march Oct. 16 in San Antonio, Texas, and the journey was scheduled to end by mid-afternoon on Wednesday at Hurlburt Field in Florida.

Over the last eight days, the soldiers, comprised of six relay teams with participants from Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations forces, have walked through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and into Alabama where Tuesday’s ninth day of marching began in the early morning hours in Mobile.

In Baldwin County, the soldiers made stops at Loxley Elementary School and Rosinton School on Tuesday, before continuing on to begin the final leg of the journey before dawn in Pensacola.

Scheduled stops on Wednesday included Pensacola and Gulf Breeze before continuing on into Okaloosa County, Florida.

According to the website, www.specialopswalk.com, Special Ops Walk helps raise money to benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation was founded in 1980 to provide support and assistance to the families of fallen and wounded Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations forces, which include Army Rangers and Special Forces (Green Berets), Navy SEALs, Air Force Sepcial Tactics, Pararescumen, Combat Controllers, Special Operations Weather Team and Tactical Air Control Party, Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment and Marine Corps special operations personnel.

The SOWF provides the surviving children of fallen warriors with a full college education, including tuition, books, fees, room and board, and a computer and printer.
