During the month of August, Camp 1864 members were busy honoring their ancestors. On Aug. 1, camp members were at the Robertsdale Gun Show with an information-recruitment table. Camp members Larry and Judy Johnson, Anthony and Brian Taylor, Bob Ridle, Tommy Rhodes, David and Shirli Kralik, Chris, Shannon and Patrick Hathcock, Dr. James Baggett and Anita Cox provided educational information and passed out information on how to join the heritage organization.
During the monthly meeting on August 10, two new members, Tony Shoemaker and Paul Williams, were inducted into the camp. The program for the evening was provided by Blanton Blankenship who spoke on camp life at Fort Morgan and the Battle of Mobile Bay.
On Saturday, Aug. 21, camp members Britton Kelly, Larry Johnson, Heritage Guard Lt. Judy Johnson, David Myers and Southwest Brigade Commander Beetle Bailey traveled to Chatom, Ala. to attend the dedication of a new Confederate Monument. Pvt. Gibeon Jefferson Sullivan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was responsible for the placement of the monument.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a historical, patriotic, educational, benevolent, non-sectarian and non-political organization. A top priority of Camp 1864 is education of which the award-winning newsletter, “Mail Call”, accomplishes this charge Camp 1864 meets at the Gift Horse Restaurant in Foley, on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. for dinner followed by the meeting/program at 6:45 pm. The public, friends, family, and anyone interested in joining this heritage organization are all invited to attend.
