DAPHNE, Ala.— A source said the Lowe’s Home Improvement in Daphne — along Frederick Boulevard near Highway 181 — is one of more than a thousand Lowe’s stores that have made cuts to its management staff.
“(They) will be,” one local store manager said when asked if the store would be joining in the layoffs, but he did not want to give his name.
Another manager said he could not comment about the situation at the time.
“There’s no comments we can make at this time,” Curtis Clecker, a local store manager, said.
The company — a nationwide home improvement chain with 1,725 stores — laid off about 1,700 middle managers throughout the country, which is around one full-time position per store, Lowe’s spokesperson Katie Cody said. The company is adding between 8,000 and 10,000 hourly, part-time weekend positions, which is around four to eight positions per store, Cody said.
“It kind of streamlines management positions and allows them to help out all throughout the store,” Cody said, noting that before there were managers who would specialize in specific areas of the store and now there will be four to six assistant managers per store who answer directly to the store manager.
The decision to bring in part-time, weekend sales staff is in hopes to increase the amount of customer service during the busiest time of the week.
“We really wanted to get more of the sales on the floor when our stores are busiest, which is during the weekends,” Cody said.
The company began taking applications this week for the new part-time sales positions.
