FOLEY — When the Foley City Council was scheduled to hold its regular meeting Monday, it did so with all of its incumbent council members set to serve another term.
That’s because when Wayne Trawick, Vera Quaites, Ralph G. Hellmich, C. “Rick” Blackwell and Charlie Ebert decided to run for re-election for their respective district seats, they did so unopposed.
Therefore, state law mandates that a certificate of election was granted and the council members’ new terms will beginning the first Monday in November.
However, the same cannot be said for the position of Foley mayor. Instead, incumbent John E. Koniar has opposition from James M. Wood, who also ran for the position in 2008.
Therefore, Foley residents will choose between the two candidates during a municipal election on Aug. 28.
But that won’t be the only municipality facing an election on that day. In Magnolia Springs, residents will choose between Jim Gaines and incumbent Bob Holk for Place 3, and Tom Webb and Richard Leverette for Place 4.
Current Magnolia Springs Councilman Kenneth Underwood ran unopposed for mayor, as did Dottie Johnson for Place 1, Jim May for Place 2 and Ben Dykema for Place 5. So as with Foley, a certificate of election will be granted at the council’s next regular meeting on Aug. 20.
Two positions are up for grabs at the Summerdale Town Council. Place 3 has three contenders: Shannon Cheves, Arnold Ralph Clopton and Mary Carolyn McDaniel. Summerdale residents will choose between Gerald W. Hughes and Cheryl Wallace Stewart for Place 5. The remaining positions will be certified at next Monday’s regular meeting.
No such certification will be made in Elberta. Instead, residents will decide who fills each Town Council seat at the polls.
Incumbent mayor Steve Kirkpatrick is running against Marvin Williams. Alma I. Doege and Ernie Gabel are vying for Place 1. Randy Kurtts is running against incumbent Jim Hamby for Place 2. Place 3 is being sought by Michael Hudson and Michael Stockwell. For Place 4, voters will choose from Jason S. Alms, Gene Salzmann and Betty Wood. Incumbents and fellow council members Clark Cathey and Don Koontz Sr. will vie for Place 5, along with Chris Bourne.
Elberta residents can learn more about the town council candidates next week when the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce hosts a political forum at 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at Elberta Town Hall.
Following each municipality’s election on Aug. 28, newly-elected will also take office in November.
