South Baldwin municipal elections Tuesday

FOLEY — If any South Baldwin voters are on the fence about candidates in their respective municipal elections, they still have a few more days for decision-making.

That’s because last week’s bout with Hurricane Isaac caused closures, evacuations — and rescheduling of municipal elections.

Now municipalities in The Foley Onlooker readership area will head to the polls on Tuesday. Those municipalities include Foley, Magnolia Springs, Elberta and Summerdale.

In Foley, John E. Koniar has opposition from James M. Wood, who also ran for the position in 2008. The remaining City Council positions were unopposed.

In Magnolia Springs, residents will choose between Jim Gaines and incumbent Bob Holk for Place 3, making it only one race in the municipality.

Current Magnolia Springs Councilman Kenneth Underwood ran unopposed for mayor, as did Dottie Johnson for Place 1, Jim May for Place 2 and Ben Dykema for Place 5. So as with Foley, a certificate of election will be granted at the council’s next regular meeting on Aug. 20. In addition, Richard Leverette withdrew from the race for Place 4, deeming Tom Webb the winner.

Two positions are up for grabs at the Summerdale Town Council. Place 3 has three contenders: Shannon Cheves, Arnold Ralph Clopton and Mary Carolyn McDaniel. Summerdale residents will choose between Gerald W. Hughes and Cheryl Wallace Stewart for Place 5. The remaining positions will be certified at next Monday’s regular meeting.

No such certification will be made in Elberta. Instead, residents will decide who fills each Town Council seat at the polls.

Incumbent mayor Marvin Williams is running against Steve Kirkpatrick. Alma I. Doege and Ernie Gabel are vying for Place 1. Randy Kurtts is running against incumbent Jim Hamby for Place 2. Place 3 is being sought by Michael Hudson and Michael Stockwell. For Place 4, voters will choose from Jason S. Alms, Gene Salzmann and Betty Wood. Incumbents and fellow council members Clark Cathey and Don Koontz Sr. will vie for Place 5, along with Chris Bourne.

Unless run-off elections are required, newly-elected candidates will take office in November.
