DAPHNE, Alabama — The Southern Shootout belied its title as temperatures combined with steady winds rivaled conditions of the Great North Friday and Saturday. Fortunately only a few cases of mild frost-bite were reported—mostly involving referees’ knee caps.

Thirty boys teams and 18 girls teams converged on the Eastern Shore over the weekend at Al Trione Park in Daphne as well as Founders Park and Majors Field in Fairhope.

In the Boys EPL Flight, 5A Briarwood Christian emerged as the Elite Champion point leader ahead of runner-up Enterprise High. Davidson and Murphy followed tied with five points each, Daphne’s 2-1 comeback win over Pelham put the Trojans next in the eight-team pool’s final standings. Fairhope and Pelham totaled even to out-point Auburn in the overall rankings.

The BCS Lions opened with a 1-1 tie with Murphy Friday, defeated Auburn 2-0 later that night, edged Daphne 2-1 in the semifinals Saturday and topped Enterprise 3-1 in the finals. EHS went 2-1-1 on their way boosted by a 5-2 semifinal win over Pelham. The Wildcats opened with a 1-0 win over Fairhope but fell to Davidson 1-1 before rebounding with the three-goal win over PHS.

Daphne’s consolation win over PHS at Trione was led by Austin Ahern who tied the score 1-1 with a second-half comeback sparker off a corner kick from Josh Gurvitz. Tyler Cox then sealed the win on a penalty kick. Will Carpenter had two saves for the DHS Trojans (2-1-1) who also defeated Auburn 1-0 and tied Murphy 2-2.

The Fairhope Pirates dropped their opener to eventual EHS by a slim 1-0 margin, tied Pelham and Davidson with 1-1 scores before getting edged by Auburn 1-0 in the consolation round.

In La Liga play, Athens took home the champions title with a tight differential edge over Northview. Both teams won their pools and totaled nine points for the tournament and met in the Silver Match for a head-to-head showdown, but Athens clobbered the Cougars 6-0 for the crown.

Spanish Fort and St.Paul’s finished as co-runners-up and battled to a 0-0 tie in the consolation match. The SF Toros defeated Thompson 2-1, Benjamin Russell 3-1, but dropped their opener to the eventual flight winner in a tight 1-0 loss. St Paul’s Saints fell to Sylacauga then rebounded to top Stanhope-Elmore 3-2 Friday.

In the Bundesliga group, 6A Mountain Brook edged 3A Bayside Academy on differential points, but removed more doubt with a 3-0 head-to-head win in the flight finals over the Admirals. Bayside made it to the championship match with wins over Pope John-Paul II 2-0, Theodore 4-0 and Brewbaker 4-0. The Spartans defeated Bishop Carroll 7-1, Smith Station 3-0 and 5A Gulf Shores 8-1. The Dolphins finished with a 2-0 loss to Brewbaker in the consolation match after falling to Smith Station 3-1, but defeating 5A Carroll 2-1.

In Serie A competition, Faith Academy won the title by just edging Robertsdale in the point standings with UMS-Wright taking third place overall. The Rams opened with a 5-1 win over Charles Henderson and a 1-1 tie with St. James. On Saturday, the UMS-W Bulldogs held the Rams to a 1-1 match, but Faith then picked up major points with 10-0 shutout of Baldwin County High.

RHS worked into a second-place finish with a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs, a 5-0 win over BCHS, a 1-1 tie with CHHS, but falling in a close one to St. James 1-0.
