DAPHNE, Alabama - In the girls Gold Bracket, Auburn’s Lady Tigers took the early lead Friday with shutout wins over Prattville, 3-0, and 6-0 over Daphne. Fairhope’s Lady Pirates also had a good first day with a 1-0 win over Trinity and a 3-2 victory over Prattville. But were already behind on goals allowed by the time play resumed Saturday.

AHS went on to claim the tournament crown with a 7-0 dispatching of Trinity and a 5-0 shutout of Fairhope. The Lady Tiger defense allowed no goals to finish well ahead of second-place Faith and third-place Fairhope. DHS was fourth followed by Prattville and Trinity.

On Saturday, DHS fell to Prattville 4-2 then defeated Trinity 4-1. Fairhope dropped a 1-0 match to Faith before the loss to Auburn.

“Auburn’s got a good team, no doubt,” said DHS first-year coach Jim Fawcett. “We’re on a learning curve here with so many young players, but I’m extremely proud of the girls’ efforts.”

The Lady Trojans field no seniors, one junior and five freshmen, yet opened with a 2-1 win over Faith Academy before the Tiger takedown. “I think they could have scored nine on us, to be perfectly honest,” Fawcett said. “But it gave us a chance to see where we stand and also to play a lot of people and that’s good. I even started a freshman in goal for us. Her first varsity game ever and it was against Auburn—and she held her own. Don’t think she wanted to come out. And I like that about all these girls, they love a challenge and don’t back down. I was very pleased with what I saw.”

In their 2-1 win over the Lady Rams of Faith, DHS was led by Rachael Lane who scored on an assist by Rachel Collins and by Yesenia Avalos’s penalty kick goal for the Trojans. Faith Academy's Cameron Kegley closed the lead with a goal in the second half.

In the girls Silver Bracket, St. Paul’s won with a 12-point total over Smith Station nearest total of seven. Gulf Shores tied Albertville with five points, Bayside finished with four ahead of St. James in the six-team field. In match play, the Lady Dolphins tied Albertville 2-2, but fell to Smith Station 2-1 Friday. On day two, GSHS tied Bayside, nil-nil, then finished with a 2-1 win over St. James. On the field, Bayside’s Lady Admirals were edged by the eventual champions 2-1, fell to Albertville 3-0 and took a 1-0 victory over St. James.

In the girls Bronze Bracket, Baldwin County High and Robertsdale represented locally. Benjamin Russell High took the title with 12 points over Sylacauga’s 10. Stanhope-Elmore followed with seven points while BCHS and RHS collected three points each ahead of American Christian Academy in sixth place. The Lady Golden Bears edged out the Lady Tigers in the final rankings due in part to goal-allowed differentials in their respective losses to the eventual champion Lady Wildcats. RHS also out-pointed BCHS in the rankings by a goal in their respective wins over ACA.
