SARALAND, Ala. — Spanish Fort American AA (Coach-pitch) All-Stars fought back from a 6-2 third inning deficit with 10 unanswered runs to score a 12-6 victory over Saraland National in the Saraland Sub-District tournament opener for both teams on June 20.
Jack Knight opened the scoring for Spanish Fort in the bottom of the first with a single to score Matthew Holston, who had tripled, to tie the game at 1-1. In the second, Braxton Grace hit a two-out double to score Nic Cockrell that put Spanish Fort ahead 2-1.
Spanish Fort fell behind 6-2 after giving up five runs in the top of the third, but quickly narrowed the gap to 6-5 with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Holston knocked in Brady Wiggins, who had tripled, with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. Following singles by Knight and Brody Wiggins, Mitchell Babbs hit a double to score both runners and make it 6-5.
Spanish Fort then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Matthew Knotts and Cockrell reached on base hits, and Grace delivered a double to score Knotts and tie the game. Following a Saraland error which allowed two more runs to score, Brady Wiggins and Holston added run-scoring doubles for a 10-6 Spanish Fort lead.
In the fifth, Spanish Fort added two more runs on a single by Babbs, a double by Mason Boyd, a fielder’s choice and a single by Joe Paul Pennington.
Grace ended the game 2-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBI’s, while Holston and Brady Wiggins were both 2-3 with a double and triple each.
Five other Spanish Fort players had two hits apiece: Knight, Brody Wiggins, Babbs, Pennington and Cockrell.
