SPANISH FORT, Ala. —Spanish Fort American took the Dixie Youth Sub-District 2 AAA title late Wednesday night, but not without a fight from the Fairhope American All-Stars.
The Spanish Fort team had not suffered a loss on their home turf and could have won the double-elimination tournament in the early game by defeating the once-beaten Fairhope club. But the Fairhope boys rallied late to take and hold the lead for a 6-5 win forcing a second and decisive final.
But the host-team bats lit up the scoreboard in game two behind solid pitching by Nathan Brown for a 25-6 win. Fairhope also suffered some sidelining injuries and could not keep up with the SF run machine.
Both teams advance to the AAA District tournament being hosted at Garrett Park in Robertdale beginning Saturday.
Brown pitched all four innings in the deciding game giving up seven hits and three walks. Fairhope scored five runs off five hits, two walks and an error in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-2 lead. But SF wasted no time getting back in front sending 16 batters to the plate and pounding out four 2-RBI hits and 10 runs for a 12-5 score after 1-1/2 innings.
Brown faced only nine more batters the rest of the way as Fairhope managed one more run in the bottom of the fourth. SF added six runs in the third and seven in the fourth capping the offensive with a 3-RBI double by Dawson Tidwell. Chandler Passons drove in two with a triple in the third. Jalen Hicks added a hit, and Brown and Von Siebert each had doubles. Siebert had seven RBIs off three doubles and a bases-loaded walk. Harrison Biggs reached four times and scored four times on two walks, an error and a single.
Fairhope's Drake White had an RBI double, Jared Champion had an RBI single and double, Carson Gandy and Ethan McLaughlin had RBI singles and Garrison Childress, Alenxander Cobb and Jack Hixson also delivered hits for Fairhope.
The first game was a pitching duel between Fairhope's Drake White and SF's Von Siebert. White got the 6-5 win on seven strike outs and seven hits. Siebert struck out nine with an eight hitter.
At the plate Fairhope was led with hits by Slade McLendon, McLaughlin, Gandy (2), Gabriel Silcox, Champion, White and John LaGuardia. Siebert got hit support from Passons (2), Biggs, Brown (2), JoJo McLeod and Tidwell (2).
