Fairhope rallied from a 27-21 deficit to start the fourth period and pulled within three points at 37-34 on a three-pointer from Britton Flowers with 27 seconds to play. The Pirates stole the ball on Spanish Fort’s next possession, but missed a potential game-tying three as time expired.

“It was a very close game, back and forth from beginning to the end,” Spanish Fort head coach Dru Powell said. “We tip our hats to Fairhope. Those guys have improved tremendously, coach (Robbie) Robertson is really doing a nice job there.”

Tournament MVP Reagan Eubanks scored a game-high 14 points for the Toros, who improved to 17-2 overall.

“Reagan played well, he’s been playing well all year,” Powell said. “He is a really good player, I think he is really underrated. He is our team leader. Our kids know that, and most everybody in the county knows that. I’m glad he is on our team for sure.”

Spanish Fort has an 8-1 record since the Christmas break, including two tournament wins. Austin Depperschmidt added nine points for the Toros, who beat Gulf Shores and Daphne in the first two rounds to reach the finals.

Earnest Andrews had 10 points for the Pirates, who fell to 7-10. Spanish Fort defeated Fairhope 63-30 when the teams met Dec. 18.

“They played hard, I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win,” Fairhope head coach Robbie Robertson said. “We knew it would be a battle coming in here. They got us pretty good last time we played, so our guys were ready to play tonight.”

The teams tied at 5-all to end the first period, and the Toros led 19-17 at the half.

“Both sides offensively had a struggle, but both teams played really well defensively,” Powell said. “We were very fortunate to get the win, and I’m just super proud of these kids.”

Fairhope outscored Spanish Fort 13-7 in the fourth. Trent Baggerly added nine points in the loss for the Pirates, who visit Daphne in area play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Robertson was proud of his team’s defensive effort against the Toros.

“We’ve been improving on the defensive side of the ball over the last few weeks,” he said. “We’ve had trouble scoring throughout the year, so we’ve gone back and tried to concentrate on the fundamentals of being better on defense.”

Spanish Fort will host Williamson in 5A Area 2 play on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Eubanks was the tournament’s MVP, while teammate Quinn Atkinson was named to the All-Tournament Team. Fairhope’s Nate Andrews also made the All-Tournament Team.
