GULF SHORES, Alabama — The Spanish Fort Toros beat West Florida 42-29 on the first day of the Coca-Cola tournament at Gulf Shores High School on Monday.
The Toros (7-2) held West Florida to just three made free throws and no field goals to take a 26-3 lead into halftime.
"We like for our defense to get our offense started, and our defense was very effective in the first half," Spanish Fort head coach Dru Powell said. "It was a good game for our guys. We got some playing time for some guys who don't always get it. They play hard and compete every day in practice so it is important that we got those guys in."
Kevin Townsend, Grant Shumacher and Reagan Eubanks had six points each to pace the Toros, who face Pensacola in the second round of the tournament tomorrow. Pensacola defeated Benjamin Russell 57-54 in the first round.
"We will have our work cut out for us against Pensacola," Powell said. "We are excited about the opportunity to play and get better."
