SPANISH FORT, Alabama — Jesse McCarty and John Jaegge each scored in the first half for Spanish Fort then held off the Faith Academy Rams for the final 40 minutes to claim a big 2-0 5A Section win at home Friday night.
Caleb Gautreaux and Connor Uhle picked up the assists including a sliding steal by Uhle on a Ram breakaway to set up Jaegge’s insurance goal with 3:15 left in the first half. McCarty scored about 10 minutes into the game on a Toro blitz folowing a corner kick by Gautreaux.
Nick Hackman picked up his seventh shutout of the year for Spanish Fort as the Toros 2-0 win improved their record to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in 5A Section play.
“Definitely helps us getting into the middle of the season,” said first year coach Mitch Warfield. “We’ve started off kind of slow and now we’re getting into the grind of the schedule and it really wears on the legs by the second half. Faith has a really good team and I’m proud of how we fought to get the lead and then to keep it and keep them out of ours. They came hard, but we came harder. Really proud of these guys. But we’re also trying to take care of ourselves when and where we can. We want to avoid injuries but still have to play hard and we have a long way to go. Biggest thing for us right now is avoiding injuries. We’re not as deep as some of the teams we have to play, so staying healthy is a big part of it for us.”
The Toros take on Daphne at Jubilee Stadium at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
GIRLS Spanish Fort 3, Faith Academy 0: Spanish Fort’s girls picked up a big 5A Section 2 win over a strong Faith Academy team Friday on a windy night on The Hill at SFHS with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Rams.
Jessica Watts scored midway into the first half for the Lady Toros for a 1-0 lead at the break. After nearly 30 scoreless minutes into the second half, Rebekah Diring steered a ball down the sideline from the mid-line to the 18 before crossing and pumping a hard shot off the keeper’s leg and into the net with 10:14 to go in the match. Alyssa Brandle then scored off a Summer Stout assist at 7:25 to secure the lead and the win.
Johanna Scott got the shutout in goal for the 5-1-1, 2-0 Lady Toros who travel to Daphne tonight at 5:30 p.m.
“Faith has a good club and so this was a good win and a real confidence builder for us and Johanna did a great job again back there and the defense got back and helped when she needed it,” Spanish Fort head coach Barclak Kercher said. “That’s Jo’s house. And the rule is nobody gets in Jo’s house and tonight Faith challenged our defense and her, but we responded well and came out with a big win.
“Our sweeper Calley Sholder — who sometimes doesn’t get enough credit in the back— did great job and has been doing an outstanding job. She’s our last line of defense and makes good decisions back there for us.”
