GULF SHORES, Alabama – The Spanish Fort Toros started the second half on a 12-0 run and outscored Gulf Shores 24-4 in the third period on the way to a 45-38 win on Friday in Gulf Shores.
Spanish Fort trailed 15-14 at the half but held a 39-19 lead after the third period.
“I think that we are our best when we push the ball in transition and in the first half we didn’t do that,” Spanish Fort head coach Dru Powell said. “In the third quarter we were a lot better with our transition offense.”
Gulf Shores started the fourth period on a 14-3 run and pulled within seven points at 42-35 on Parker Mason’s basket with 2:20 left in the game. Isaac Ronan had back-to-back three-pointers at the 2:50 mark, and Richard Guyer hit a three for the final score of the game.
Spanish Fort’s Reagan Eubanks led all scorers with 17 points and Garrett Schumaker added 10 in the win for the Toros. Ronan finished with 14, Mason scored eight and Guyer and Daniel Laborde scored seven apiece in the loss for Gulf Shores.
“We played well enough in the third quarter to give us a little bit of a cushion there at the end,” Powell said. “Gulf Shores did make a couple threes on us there late. Isaac (Ronan) hit a couple on us and Richard (Guyer) did there at the end, but I was proud of the way our guys responded to their run.”
Gulf Shores will visit Theodore on Tuesday and BC Rain next Friday. Spanish Fort will visit BC Rain on Tuesday and Williamson on Friday. Spanish Fort must win those games to stay alive in the area title race.
