Spanish Fort boys win at Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Dalton Owens hit six 3-pointers and led the Spanish Fort Toros with a game-high 22 points in a 62-47 win at Gulf Shores on Friday night.

Owens scored all 22 points in the first three periods as the Toros improved to 13-8 overall and 3-2 in Class 5A Area 2 play.

“Dalton has been off a little the past three ball games,” Spanish Fort head coach Earnest Hill said. “He actually came out tonight and had some wide open shots and he knocked them down. When he knocks that first and maybe that second one down, I think we’ll have a good night.

“When him and Ben (Redman) are on we are hard to beat. Ben is shooting the ball very well, and Tejhuan (Billingslea) is getting rebounds.”

John McGrath added 11 points in the win for Spanish Fort. Brandon Silvers scored 18 points to lead Gulf Shores in the loss.

Hill had been unhappy with his team’s fourth period play in previous wins. Gulf Shores outscored the Toros 20-11 in the fourth on Friday.

“Any time we win I am happy,” Hill said. “But we are still not playing consistent. We are still playing sloppy at times. We are playing good and running our offense at times. When we run our offense we get good shots off, but when we don’t it is forced shots.

“Overall I was happy tonight. The only thing I was disappointed with was our free throws. We went 7-for-17 from the free throw line. We can’t win close ball games like that.”

The Toros play at Robertsdale on Friday at 8 p.m. Gulf Shores (5-15, 0-6) hosts UMS-Wright on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
