SPANISH FORT, Ala.—In good faith, the City Council postponed for two weeks consideration of a nuisance property violation during the April 18 regular meeting.
After meeting Monday afternoon with Building Official Bruce Renkert and the property owner’s recently retained attorney, Mayor Joe Bonner recommended the council postpone the item until May 2, giving the longtime Wayside Drive property owner time to “get a schedule organized.”
At issue is the requested removal of unlicensed vehicles and large quantities of unused materials, some of which have sat untouched for years.
“In no uncertain terms we consider this a junkyard,” Bonner said. “It just doesn’t fit a residential neighborhood.”
Renkert shared photos during the informal work session showing no fewer than 12 vehicles on the property as well as “a couple of trailers, enormous pieces of steel and a lot of other junk.”
Preliminary discussions with the attorney revealed a scrap dealer has been contacted about the materials, and Renkert is confident the city will benefit from a zoning perspective and the property owner financially.
