Spanish Fort City Council sets District 3 interviews

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Interviews to fill the District 3 City Council seat will begin at 7:30 a.m. April 6 in the conference room at City Hall.

The meeting is open to the public and will begin the vetting process for three candidates nominated at large by the community to fill the seat left vacant Feb. 20 when longtime councilman Joe Thomas passed away.

By law the council has 60 days to appoint an interim replacement to serve out Thomas’ term set to expire in November 2012. City Clerk Mary Lynn Williams said the position must be filled by April 20 to comply.

District 3 residents Wendy Pickering, Bob Pannone and Bobby Fortenberry have been nominated, and the council unanimously passed a motion at Monday’s regular meeting closing the nomination period.

“It’s going to be a tough decision,” said Mayor Joe Bonner.

The order of the interviews was not immediately known except that Pannone, who attended Monday’s informal work session, agreed to go first.
