SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Resident William Stanford has only a few days remaining to convince the City Council’s he’s making a good-faith effort to clean up his Wayside Drive property before the city proceeds with action against the nuisance property.
The council decided during its May 16 meeting to give Stanford until the June 6 meeting to continue making progress clearing his property of unlicensed, "junk" cars and other scrap materials that have drawn complaints from at least one neighboring property owner.
At the May meeting, Stanford’s attorney petitioned the council to allow a "reasonable" amount of time for his client to complete the junk removal citing Stanford’s poor health, the difficulty of arranging for assistance and the hardship transporting the vehicles in question to Mississippi has created.
Mayor Joe Bonner said the issue is not a recent one, though, because the initial complaints date back a minimum of five years, and the council exhausted "all o its PR skills" before finally declaring the property a nuisance in early May.
The council agreed at its last meeting, however, only to postpone consideration of a resolution ordering abatement of the nuisance property, and Stanford must prove by June 6 that his efforts have continued with the same fervor during the interim
The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. June 6 at the Gathering Place in the Prodisee Pantry immediately after a 5 p.m. informal work session at City Hall.
