Spanish Fort Educational Enrichment Foundation names scholarship recipients

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Katie Rucker and Garrett Hurst have been named the 2011 recipients of the Spanish Fort Educational Enrichment Foundation’s Clemons-Imle Scholarship.

Each year SFEEF honors one graduating male and female student from Spanish Fort High School with $1,000 to be used at the two- or four-year college or university of their choosing. The award honors the late Art Clemons and Bill Imle, whom SFEEF Executive Director Sandra Bostrom called "two members of the community well known for their community service and kind spirit." Clemons also served on the SFEEF board of directors.

The students learned of the awards during SFHS’s Seniors Awards Night on May 19.

The Clemons-Imle decision for 2011 was a difficult one, Bostrom said, because "SFEEF is extremely proud to have so many outstanding students apply."

Rucker and Horst were selected, however, for their demonstrated community service and leadership character traits throughout their time at SFHS.

Rucker, the daughter of Julie and Brent Baker, will attend Auburn University to study nursing and pre-medicine. Her involvement at SFHS included French Club, National Honor Society

and Girls Service Club, "along with her numerous commitments and service to the community," Bostrom said.

Horst, son of Debbie and Mike Horst, plans to attend college in Mississippi, and learned only recently that Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., has offered him a partial athletic scholarship to play football. In addition to his exploits on the field, Horst was also very active in the SFHS Key Club and "other school and community endeavors," Bostrom said.
