SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Alicia Linder scored four goals, Rebekah Diring three, Elissa VandeWaa two and Moriah King one as Spanish Fort advanced on a 10-0 blanking of Russell County to host Gulf Shores in the second round of the 5A state soccer playoffs Saturday at 5 p.m.
Johanna Scott recorded her 17th shutout in goal this season for the No. 2 Toros now 21-4-1 going into tomorrow's rivalry-riddled clash.
Spanish Fort coach Barclay Kercher said her team performed well after having spring break and then delays. The last regular season match was canceled to local weather and the first round was postponed three days due to the tornadoes throughout the state.
“Having had a week off for spring break and then coming back and playing well is good to see,” she said. “It was a good game for us mentally. We came out and scored seven goals before the half. Executed off some corner kicks and did things we work on in practice. So to come out after a few days off and win like that is good. But the fact is, obviously, next we have to pick it up because at every level the competition just gets tougher. For Saturday, we will work on making sure our mental preparation is good and, of course, focus on the little things that are always important. When we do all that and are on, that's when we work together as a team.”
Lady Pirates beat Baker
MOBILE, Ala. — The Fairhope Lady Pirates went up 2-1 before the half and held on to defeat the Lady Hornets at Baker High by that score in round one of the 6A state playoffs Tuesday.
Anne Baumhower converted a penalty kick and Darian Hill scored for the Pirates who missed the playoffs last year. Maha Marouff scored for Baker.
“It was a very hard-fought game,” Fairhope coach Steve Morisani Jr. said. “We faced a very scrappy Baker team. I can see why they were in the top two in their section. I think we were a little nervous. A little jittery at times. This group does not have much playoff experience but they did a good job and held off a good Baker team. They came to play.”
The Lady Pirates now travel again to face the No. 1-seeded McGill-Toolen Catholic's Yellow Jackets who 10-goaled Davidson in round one.
