Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue to hold public safety day celebration

SPANISH FORT — Come bring the kids to see Smokey Bear and Dalmation characters on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Public Safety Day celebration hosted by the Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue.

Fire Chief Roger Few said everything at the celebration will be geared toward fire safety and accident prevention.

The event will include smoke detector demonstrations, setting a car on fire and putting the fire out, and even showing how the “jaws of life” works to help occupants exit from damaged vehicles.

“We want the community to be proud of what their donations are buying and see the equipment,” he said. “It has something for everybody and we want kids and parents to come.”

This year’s event includes events for kids, hot dogs and hamburgers. Few said he expects anywhere from 100 to 500 participants to come to the event.

“We want the public to know we are driven by donations and know that they have a safe community,” he said.

Since the station opened in 1995, the Spanish Fort Fire and Rescue has hosted the annual event which is held in October in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week and Fire Safety Month.

The department currently has 31 volunteer fire fighters and 10 volunteer auxiliary members.
