DAPHNE, Alabama — Spanish Fort senior wide receiver Deon “D.J.” Johnson, 18, a University of Alabama football commitment, was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center at 8:43 p.m. Thursday night on second-degree counts of felony rape and sodomy.
He had turned himself into the Daphne Police Department earlier in the day where the charges were filed before being transported to Bay Minette.
The age of the alleged victim was not released, but was a determining factor in the arrest, said Daphne Police Sgt. Brian Gulsby.
“The basis of the charge is the age of the person. And that is less than the age of consent which is 16,” he said. “And he (Johnson) exceeds the 24-month requirement meaning he is more than 24 months older.”
The Baldwin County Correction Center’s website states that Johnson was released on a total of $20,000 bond, $10,000 for each count.
Lt. Jud Beedy of the Daphne Police Department said that the alleged victim’s parents brought forward the complaint and enough evidence for an arrest was found.
At 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, Johnson is considered an A-List college prospect. He committed to the University of Alabama earlier this year.
Baldwin County Public School System spokesperson Terry Wilhite stated that little could be said at this point and any action would depend on future findings.
“This is an active police investigation which greatly limits our ability to comment,” he said. “In any situation involving a student arrest, we have to review how the matter relates to the school campus and we’re very early on in the process with this review.”
Wilhite also indicated that Johnson did not play Friday night because he had missed some practices.
The Toros defeated B.C. Rain Friday in the first region game of the year to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in 5A Region 2. Spanish Fort will visit rival Gulf Shores in region play on Friday.
